Ralphie May: Real Talk

In 2003 Ralphie May was chosen to compete in the first season of Last Comic Standing. His second place finish earned him respect all over the nation. His career took off from there. Ralphie then appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. There, he became the first comedian in ten years to receive a standing ovation from the audience. His first comedy special Just Correct went platinum in 2004, and the CD version made the top ten list on the Billboard comedy charts. But Ralphie was just getting warmed up. He later followed up with four Comedy Central specials: Girth of a Nation (2006), Prime Cut (2007), Austin-tatious (2008), and Too Big To Ignore (2012).

Ralphie May now lives in Los Angeles with his beautiful wife, a fellow comedienne, Lahna Turner, their daughter April June May, their son August May, and their two dogs, Pimp and Hoochie Mama. Coming back to Houston this past weekend, Ralphie performed seven sold-out shows here at The Improv comedy club. And after taking pictures and signing autographs with every single one of his fans, Ralphie was nice enough to hang with us to talk comedy.

Houston’s All Time Five

The great city of Houston has been home to some of the most successful celebrities. The list includes: Patrick Swayze, Dennis Quaid and Randy Quaid, Matt Stone, Michael Strahan, Anna Nicole Smith, Renee Zellweger, Shannon Elizabeth, and Beyonce Knowles.

Some of the most successful rap artists have come out of the city of Houston. They include: Mike Jones, Pimp-C, Z-Ro, Chamillionaire, Slim Thug, Scarface, Lil’ Flip, Paul Wall, and DJ Screw.

But what about our most successful comedians? Comedy Scene in Houston compiled a list of comedians who came out of the Houston comedy scene. New Comedy Open Mic at Nico’s

There is a new comedy open mic outside of Loop 610!  You asked for and you got it.  Nico’s is located at 22610 Loop 494 in Kingwood, 77339.  This open mic takes place every Sunday and starts at 8.  There is plenty of seating and plenty of parking.  For anyone interested in performing, signup starts at 7:30 and it is first come, first serve.  Stage time will vary between 5-10 minutes, depending on how many people are performing.  If you have any questions, contact DJ Northway on Facebook.  Support local comedy!

Gerald Torregosa could be seen at most of the open mics in Houston. Two or three in one night. He would do his set, then he was on to the next stage. It was about getting on that stage and working out material. He recently made the move to New York City. Slade Ham is an established veteran in the comedy scene, with a wrap sheet of achievements. Averaging more than two hundred shows a year, Slade has performed in twenty-two countries across the world on four different continents.

A seasoned headliner at comedy clubs all across the United States, Slade also toured extensively as a feature act for both Ralphie May and Christopher Titus, having the opportunity to open for Titus’s 5th Annual End of the World Tour at the South Beach Comedy Festival for Comedy Central. He has also headlined for XM/Sirius’s two hour long, Best of Texas special in 2006, and all three of his full length albums are played daily on both the Raw Dog and the Blue Collar Comedy stations. He is also a regular on the nationally syndicated Bob & Tom Show, co-host of The Outlaw Dave Show in Houston, and host of the wildly popular bi-weekly Whiskey Brothers Podcast, which boasts more than 25,000 subscribers.

Mike MacRae: Funny Man, Funny Voice

Although a St. Louis native, this Rice University graduate got his comedic start in 1999 right here in Houston at the beloved Laff Stop. He soon developed his trademark style of blending obscure impressions into his stand-up routine. Mike’s television debut was on Comedy Central’s Premium Blend in 2001 and he has since performed on The Late Show with David Letterman, NESN’s Comedy All-Stars, and was also a cast member on the TBS sketch show Frank TV. In 2009, Mike was invited to perform on the Master’s Showcase at the Montreal Just for Laughs Comedy Festival. He has also lent his distinctive voice to numerous commercials, video games, cartoons, anime, and Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim.

Now a resident of Austin, TX, Mike performs in comedy clubs all around the nation. He is heard regularly on syndicated radio programs such as The Bob & Tom Show and The Jimmy Dore Show. Mike was also recently invited to perform at SXSW and the Moontower Comedy Festival in Austin, Texas. And tonight, he’s with us. Continue reading →
