The Whiskey Brothers: Comedy Rockstars

By David Gavri

Just four guys from Texas who are hell bent on memorbale nights filled with whiskey, mayhem, and jokes. Seeing them live is like drinking with your best friends, only these guys are funnier.

The Whiskey Brothers were not only kind enough to grace us with their presence, but they were generous enough to bring us inside their secret studio. There, we had the opportunity to witness the infamous Whiskey Brothers Podcast in-the-making as they produced their latest episode. Hangin’ with these guys was an experience like no other. What was discussed was highly inappropriate, uncontrollably funny, and overall, wildly entertaining. It’s time to tell the tale.

By David Gavri

Open mic comedy plays an essential role in the daily grind of the stand up comedian. But simply showing up doesn’t mean you’re making progress. Believe it or not, there is a proper way to go about it. Although stand up comedy is treated with reckless abandon, there is still a level of respect that should be practiced. Afterall, you might be pissing off alotta people without even knowing it.

Comedy Scene in Houston went around the city and asked our fellow comedians about their thoughts on open mic etiquette. Here is what they had to say.

By David Gavri

Sean Rouse was one of the breakout stars with Dave Attell, Greg Giraldo, and Dane Cook on Comedy Central’s “Insomniac Tour”. He was in Men in Black II and also on HBO’s critically acclaimed “Down & Dirty” with Jim Norton.

He’s dark, even though he looks innocent. He’s likeable even though he’s highly obscene. But most of all, he’s extremely entertaining. We were lucky enough to catch up with him after one of his shows right here in Houston. Continue reading

John Wessling: Comedian, HCU Founder, Whiskey Brother

By David Gavri

When comedian John Wessling was just 24 years old, he showcased his comedic talent in a comedy show where George Lopez and Carlos Mencia were both headlining. The crowd went wild for Lopez and Mencia. But for John Wessling, it was nothing but hate and anger, with a lot of booing. The crowd of 5,000 gave this opener no respect whatsoever. So what did John Wessling do about it? He did what John Wessling does best. He killed them with laughter. And he’s been killin’ it ever since.

This Houston-born comic is the founder of Houston Comedy Union. He’s also an ESPN Radio sports talk show host. And most importantly, he’s a husband, a father, and a brother of whiskey.

We got the chance to hang out with John Wessling as we kicked back and talked comedy. Continue reading

The Bob Biggerstaff Interview

By Steven Padilla

In 1991, Bob Biggerstaff was a student at the University of Houston.  One day a comedian came to the school a day before he was to perform.  He was in search of a few people to go on stage before him to start the show.  Bob was one of the guys picked.  That was his first time on stage.  He wouldn’t get back on stage until 1997.  It was then that he became a door man at the Laff Stop.  A few months later, The Laff Stop had started an open mic. That was when he started focusing on comedy.  His first paying gig was in 1999 and he became a regular in 2000.  3 years later, he went on to win Houston’s Funniest Person Contest.  In 2007 he was a semi-finalist on NBC’s Last Comic Standing.  Nowadays he is touring the country.  He frequents the open mics in Houston, telling jokes and/or playing Golden Tee.

Ambiance – Houston Open Mics

Updated June 10, 2012

Houston has a very funny, diverse group of comedians. Just as diverse are the local open mics. Each comic goes to an open mic for different reasons, stage time, timing, work on new jokes, networking, hoping to be discovered and the main reason, to perform in front of an audience. The people determine if the comic is funny and what they may need to work on. Each comic wants to establish a fanbase. Open mics are a good way to start that. If you are a fan of comedy, I encourage you to attend any one of the venues below. The comics will truly appreciate it.
