A home for local live comedy, Sherlock’s Pub was a staple within the stand up community. Not just a place to showcase your act, but also a place for comics to work on their material. Every Monday night, Sherlock’s was the most attended open mic in the city of Houston, bringing in over 45 local comedians, while also including professional comedians on tour.
As sad as it is to see it close, we are here to celebrate it and everything that it brought to the Houston comedy scene.

Just four guys from Texas who are hell bent on memorbale nights filled with whiskey, mayhem, and jokes. Seeing them live is like drinking with your best friends, only these guys are funnier.
The Whiskey Brothers were not only kind enough to grace us with their presence, but they were generous enough to bring us inside their secret studio. There, we had the opportunity to witness the infamous Whiskey Brothers Podcast in-the-making as they produced their latest episode. Hangin’ with these guys was an experience like no other. What was discussed was highly inappropriate, uncontrollably funny, and overall, wildly entertaining. It’s time to tell the tale.

Open mic comedy plays an essential role in the daily grind of the stand up comedian. But simply showing up doesn’t mean you’re making progress. Believe it or not, there is a proper way to go about it. Although stand up comedy is treated with reckless abandon, there is still a level of respect that should be practiced. Afterall, you might be pissing off alotta people without even knowing it.

Before Dean Austin started a life of comedy, the medical field was his first passion. But it all changed one day when his best friend from high school dared him to get on stage and do stand up comedy. After that, Dean Austin realized that his true calling was not in medicine, but in comedy. Since then, he’s proven to audiences all over the world that laughter is the best medicine.

Matt Golightly is a stand up comedian from San Antonio, Texas. Starting out as a writer for the San Antonio Spurs, Golightly transitioned into comedy and soon mastered every type of gig—comedy clubs, colleges, one-nighters, country clubs, and even corporate gigs. His quick wit, relatable material, and likeable stage presence earned him the number four spot as the “Funniest Person in South Texas.”
His insatiable work ethic, hard work, and talent has taken him all across the United States as well as overseas to Korea and Japan to entertain our troops. Golightly has been heard on The Bob & Tom Radio Show, and has also been seen on Fox TV, LAT TV, and the Late Shift with Kevin Ferguson. It took Chase Durousseau just two years to be crowned as Houston’s funniest person back in 2008. In 2011 he was voted as one of the “Top 3 Funniest Comics in Texas”. He’s opened up for the nation’s biggest comedians. The list includes: Damon Wayans, Louis CK, Bill Burr, Russell Peters, Gabriel Iglesias, and Jo Koy. And that’s just some of them.
Chase Durousseau has taken his comedic talents across the globe, performing in Iraq and Kuwait for the U.S. military. He recently performed in the Moontower Comedy Festival in Austin, Texas. And he’s even been heard on Sirius XM Radio’s Raw Dog Comedy. His easy going, fearlessly laid back personality has consistently make him a crowd favorite. And he’s with us today to tell it like it is.

Sean Rouse was one of the breakout stars with Dave Attell, Greg Giraldo, and Dane Cook on Comedy Central’s “Insomniac Tour”. He was in Men in Black II and also on HBO’s critically acclaimed “Down & Dirty” with Jim Norton.

When comedian John Wessling was just 24 years old, he showcased his comedic talent in a comedy show where George Lopez and Carlos Mencia were both headlining. The crowd went wild for Lopez and Mencia. But for John Wessling, it was nothing but hate and anger, with a lot of booing. The crowd of 5,000 gave this opener no respect whatsoever. So what did John Wessling do about it? He did what John Wessling does best. He killed them with laughter. And he’s been killin’ it ever since.
This Houston-born comic is the founder of Houston Comedy Union. He’s also an ESPN Radio sports talk show host. And most importantly, he’s a husband, a father, and a brother of whiskey.

Houston has a very funny, diverse group of comedians. Just as diverse are the local open mics. Each comic goes to an open mic for different reasons, stage time, timing, work on new jokes, networking, hoping to be discovered and the main reason, to perform in front of an audience. The people determine if the comic is funny and what they may need to work on. Each comic wants to establish a fanbase. Open mics are a good way to start that. If you are a fan of comedy, I encourage you to attend any one of the venues below. The comics will truly appreciate it.
