2012 Houston’s Funniest Person Recap/Review

The Houston’s Funniest Person contest was held in May and June of 2011 at The Laff Spot Comedy Club.  The winner that year was Theodore Taylor.  Shortly thereafter, The Laff Spot closed on July 3, 2011.

What was to become of the HFP contest?  Nobody would know until March of 2012.  It was then that the Houston Comedy Union and John Wessling would take control of the event.  There were still a lot of questions to be answered.  Who could enter?  When would it start?  How long would it last?  And most importantly, where would it take place?  On March 6th, all of those questions were answered.

Mike MacRae: Funny Man, Funny Voice

Although a St. Louis native, this Rice University graduate got his comedic start in 1999 right here in Houston at the beloved Laff Stop. He soon developed his trademark style of blending obscure impressions into his stand-up routine. Mike’s television debut was on Comedy Central’s Premium Blend in 2001 and he has since performed on The Late Show with David Letterman, NESN’s Comedy All-Stars, and was also a cast member on the TBS sketch show Frank TV. In 2009, Mike was invited to perform on the Master’s Showcase at the Montreal Just for Laughs Comedy Festival. He has also lent his distinctive voice to numerous commercials, video games, cartoons, anime, and Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim.

Now a resident of Austin, TX, Mike performs in comedy clubs all around the nation. He is heard regularly on syndicated radio programs such as The Bob & Tom Show and The Jimmy Dore Show. Mike was also recently invited to perform at SXSW and the Moontower Comedy Festival in Austin, Texas. And tonight, he’s with us. Continue reading →

A home for local live comedy, Sherlock’s Pub was a staple within the stand up community. Not just a place to showcase your act, but also a place for comics to work on their material. Every Monday night, Sherlock’s was the most attended open mic in the city of Houston, bringing in over 45 local comedians, while also including professional comedians on tour.

As sad as it is to see it close, we are here to celebrate it and everything that it brought to the Houston comedy scene.

Just four guys from Texas who are hell bent on memorbale nights filled with whiskey, mayhem, and jokes. Seeing them live is like drinking with your best friends, only these guys are funnier.

The Whiskey Brothers were not only kind enough to grace us with their presence, but they were generous enough to bring us inside their secret studio. There, we had the opportunity to witness the infamous Whiskey Brothers Podcast in-the-making as they produced their latest episode. Hangin’ with these guys was an experience like no other. What was discussed was highly inappropriate, uncontrollably funny, and overall, wildly entertaining. It’s time to tell the tale.

Open mic comedy plays an essential role in the daily grind of the stand up comedian. But simply showing up doesn’t mean you’re making progress. Believe it or not, there is a proper way to go about it. Although stand up comedy is treated with reckless abandon, there is still a level of respect that should be practiced. But it all changed one day when his best friend from high school dared him to get on stage and do stand up comedy. He’s entertained not only our troops, but cruise ship audiences as well, making him a popular comedian around the world. Matt Golightly: One of the Good Guys

Matt Golightly is a stand up comedian from San Antonio, Texas. Starting out as a writer for the San Antonio Spurs, Golightly transitioned into comedy and soon mastered every type of gig—comedy clubs, colleges, one-nighters, country clubs, and even corporate gigs. His quick wit, relatable material, and likeable stage presence earned him the number four spot as the “Funniest Person in South Texas.”

His insatiable work ethic, hard work, and talent has taken him all across the United States as well as overseas to Korea and Japan to entertain our troops. Golightly has been heard on The Bob & Tom Radio Show, and has also been seen on Fox TV, LAT TV, and the Late Shift with Kevin Ferguson.
